Initial Experimentation.
‘Home’ 2023.

This is one of my experimentation pieces where I explored the impact of different shades of the colour brown. While the colour brown is typically associated with ‘nature’, to me the colour brown represents reliability, linking to my feeling of reliability when I think about my home. Within this, the darker shades of brown give me a real sense of stability, whereas the lighter shades represent my emotions when I move away from home as they suggest the level of reliability is decreasing. The additional use of negative space and the grey/white in this work allows the viewer to focus solely on the house and symbolises that part of me does miss living at home.
‘Dorchester’ 2023.
Rebecca Lethbridge, ‘Dorchester’ 2023, Pen and watercolour on paper, September 2023, A3.
This painting shows my work experimenting primarily with the colour blue, and to a lesser extent with black and white. The colour blue symbolises tranquillity, whilst the colour black is meant to represent mystery and the colour white represents purity. However, on reflection to me the colour black does not provoke a specific emotion and the colour white creates a sense of emptiness within the work. The use of blue does however link to my own feelings of calmness and serenity when I visited this place.

These photos show my work from the University of Reading ‘Introduction to Watercolour’ workshop that I took part in in November 2023. The workshop provided an important opportunity to experiment with how the quantity of water affected the boldness of the colour created. I also enjoyed experimenting with how different colours interact with each other. Following on from the workshop, my practice will continue to explore how different colours interact with each and reflect on the emotions they provoke.
